OUR RATING SYSTEM
Wildernessking - Mystical Future
Review by Skooly-D Rating: 8 I'll make no reservations here, I am a fan of Wildernessking and have been for some time. So when I was offered an opportunity to obtain an advance copy for listening, and to pen my thoughts down for review, I was more than a happy camper. Let me start by saying something negative- nothing will ever top "Rubicon" to these old metal ears. That song is so blistering and cold, so frantic and crushing...I don't think there is much else out there that will ever approach the level set by this icon of a track. With this said, Mystical Future does however continue down the path that these gentlemen have carefully forged over the past several releases. Opener "White Horses" is a fine example of restraint, control and purposeful writing, setting the stage for the journey to unfold. "I Will Go To Your Tomb" ratchets things up a notch, galloping along like a trusted steed fording deep winter plumes of powdery snow. Vocally, there are some touches of folklore in the sound that really diversifies things nicely. "To Transcend" is a stunner of a beautiful segue, providing more atmosphere and again demonstrating excellent grasp on nuance and control, setting the stage for "With Arms Like Wands" perfectly. Closer "If You Leave" cinches up the knot, again showing a maturity of songwriting that eclipses many of Wildernesking's contemporaries. The clean vocals were a delightful surprise, and work very well. As a whole, this release deserves your ear and attention, and is an excellent continuation of the work these excellent men have already created.
